Computer Consultant Print E-mail

As a computer consultant, you will be assisting consumers, business owners, or both in all aspects of using the best computer systems and software that meet their needs. Your services will be in demand because it is impossible for people and small business owners who cannot afford a full-time computer specialist to keep up with the latest technology updates. You will assist them with the purchasing, set up, training, and troubleshooting of their computer systems.

You follow up by providing instruction in acclimating the computer system into the client's business. In other words, you help the individual or business owner learn how to use a computer system to make more money or gain access to more information.

Consultants can specialize in PCs or the larger business computer systems used by corporations and large institutions. PC specialists are most in demand because small- and medium-size firms cannot afford full-time computer specialists. Clients can call you for a one-time consultation or have you back as needed.

With the number of home-based businesses growing each year, most of these business owners will need someone to advise them on their computer needs. That someone could be you.

$800 for simple advising to $1,000 for a home office setup and equipment.

Pricing Guidelines

$60 to $100+ per hour, depending on your level of expertise, training, experience, and customers. Go by the industry guidelines and network with others.

Computer training and education and/or a technology degree.
Work as a systems analyst, trainer, or teacher.
Obviously, be skilled at technology "trouble-shooting," and be able to quickly recognize the reason for a computer or software failure.
Need a thorough knowledge of computers used for the business and their related software.
Must have patience and be able to teach the system to your client.

Income Potential

Can range from $40,000 to $250,000 + a year.

Type of Business

One-third in-home, running and marketing your consulting service; two-thirds out-of-the-home, working at the client's office.

Target Market

Small- and medium-size businesses (many home-based), individuals who need advice on purchasing a computer or are learning computer basics or how to use a software program.

Success Tips

Market your service constantly.
Educate potential clients as to how your computer consulting can help them increase their profits.
Know your specialization, or if you are a generalist, have sources you can turn to if you do not know an answer.
